41 YEARS
As most of you know by now Dorothy and I celebrated or 40th Wedding Anniversary on the September 2nd. One of Dorothy's fondest unfulfilled wish was to go to Galena for a visit. Well, I decide after 40 years of putting up with me I would take her there but not on the holiday. We went mid week, Wednesday into Thursday. Because she already knew about the trip i was trying to figure out another surprise and i thought " What haven't we done since our honeymoon." When we went to Montreal we stayed with a couple in there home through a service call LOG EXPO because we went to Expo 67. We with that in mind i decide we would stay at a Bed n Breakfast in Galena. Dorothy never asked where we we staying. So i think it was quiet the Surprise when we Arrived there at one of the places that was pointed out to us on our Trolley tour of the sights of Galena. Back in the early mining days of Galena. a few of these house were called "Painted Ladies Houses" I wonder why? well with that much said I think it's time for a little picture recap of the trip probably a few explanations of what you will be seeing. The Park Avenue Bed and Breakfast
We started the day with a senic 2 hr trolley tour of Galena with stops during the tour at the oldest building in Galena, the Dowling House built in 1826 by a fellow named John Dowling it was used as a trading post and had living quarters upstairs. We then went on to the biggest house in Galena, The Belvidere Mansion. It was constructed in 1857 by J. Russell Jones, a steamboat magnate and an ambassador to Belgium. 5,000 square feet and 22 rooms. The people that own it now still live in the house but only occupy the third floor during the tourist season.
