On day 2, which was raining, We Visit the home of President Grant.. It was built in 1860 for Alexander Jackson, a Galena city clerk. In 1865 the home was purchased by several Galena Residents for $2,500 and after they furnished it the presented it to Grant on his victorious return as a Civil War hero. Today the home still has 90% of the original furnishings.
DESOTO HOTEL

This hotel has had many very famous guest. Amoung the President Lincoln and Steven Douglas and was the campaign headquaters of the future President Grant. In 1980 this hotel, which was at one time the tallest in the country,at 7 stories had the top stories removed because the town was told either refurbish it or tear it down.
These are the flood gates that protected the city for many many years from the rising Galena River which at one time was one of the biggest steamboat ports in the country. Oh by the way when Galena was in it formative years it had a larger population the the city of Chicago.
